De même que les notes
inscrites dans un journal intime reportent la quotidienneté de
la vie, la fugacité des pensées, la banalité de
certains faits et gestes ou relatent un voyage, les lieux
découverts et les différentes personnes croisées
ou les gens qui me sont proches, mon travail a un caractère
intimiste, narratif et autobiographique.
Tout commence par un cliché photo, un instantané à un moment de la journée, choisi au gré de mon humeur: un coin de restaurant, une journée à Coney Island ou un voyage au Japon. Au fil des toiles et des sujets peints, de la prise de vue et de l'angle adopté, je choisi de mettre le public en position de spectateur-voyeur, ou de spectateur-acteur. En position de spectateur-voyeur, quand par hasard il se trouve à observer un groupe de marchands ou des personnes assises, peut-être des collectionneurs, lors d'une foire d'art contemporain; ou quand, malgré lui, il regarde des adolescents traverser la rue dans le tumulte de leur jeunesse. En position de spectateur acteur, quand il croise un homme emmitouflé dans son manteau remontant Bedford avenue un jour de neige ou quand il déambule dans les allées encombrées de "pulse", ou encore lorsqu'il se retrouve prêt à sauter dans une autotampon de la fête foraine de Coney Island. Ces documents, ces instantanés, ces faits anodins que tout le monde identifie, que tout le monde imagine sont autant de matériaux qui sont la source et la base de mon travail d'artiste. Travail d'analyse sociale montrant à qui veut bien le regarder une réalité sans artifice de la vie au quotidien. As well as notes in a diary tell the routine of everyday life, the fleetingness of thoughts, the triviality of some moves, or they relate a journey, discovered places and people briefly met or relatives, my work is of an intimate, narrative and autobiographique kind. At the beginning there is a photograph, a snapshot at a moment of the day, chosen to my mood's liking : a restaurant area, a day in Coney Island or a trip in Japan. With the current of paintings and their suspects, the shots and the chosen approach, I decide to put the audience into a voyeur or an actor position. The Spectator is in a voyeur position when he finds himself, by chance, looking at a group of art dealers or people just sitting, maybe collectors, during a art fair, or when he gazes unwillingly at teenagers crossing the road in the boisterous way of youth. The spectator is in an actor position when he meets a man wrapped in his coat, walking up Bedford avenue on a Snowy day, or when he strolls along alleys clogged up with the pulse of ambling people, or when he's looking for a friend lost in the crowd or he's ready to jump into a bump car of Coney Island's fun fair. These documents, these snapshots, these insignificant events identified by anyone, lived through or imagined by everybody are the basic materials of my artist work. A work of social analysis showing to one who really wants to see, an artless reality of everyday life. Philippe Nuell
